People & Groups • Old Testament
Rizpah was a concubine of Saul and the mother of Armoni and Mephibosheth. She became known for faithfully guarding the exposed bodies of her sons after their execution by the Gibeonites.
Biblical Usage
Rizpah appears in connection with Saul’s household, Abner’s relationship with her, and the famine during David’s reign. After the Gibeonites executed her sons, she watched over their bodies for five months, protecting them from birds and beasts. Her action was reported to David and preceded the burial of Saul’s and Jonathan’s bones with the executed men.
