Salt
Salt was used for food, preservation, purification, and offerings. Scripture also uses it as a symbol of covenant permanence, loyalty, hospitality, purity, and the preserving influence expected of God’s people.
Biblical Usage
Salt accompanied meat offerings and symbolized a covenant of perpetual obligation. To eat salt with another expressed hospitality and a binding obligation to protect or serve the host. Jesus compared his disciples to salt because of its cleansing and preserving uses.
