Sanhedrin
The Sanhedrin was the chief Jewish tribunal in Jerusalem, consisting of priests, elders, and scribes. In the time of Jesus it exercised important religious, civil, and judicial authority under Roman rule.
Biblical Usage
The Jerusalem Sanhedrin conducted proceedings against Jesus and heard the cases of Peter, John, Stephen, and Paul. It exercised civil, administrative, religious, and limited criminal authority in the period of the New Testament.
