Scribes
Scribes were professional writers, officials, and later specialists in studying, copying, interpreting, and teaching the Law. In the New Testament many were associated with the Pharisees and were criticized for allowing human traditions to obscure God’s commands.
Biblical Usage
In the New Testament, scribes were public teachers and were commonly associated with the Pharisees. Jesus frequently opposed their traditions when these obscured God’s commandments, though some scribes, including Gamaliel, showed a more favorable spirit toward the apostles.
