Seventy weeks
Prophecy • Both
The seventy weeks are Daniel’s prophetic period of seventy weeks of years, commonly understood as 490 years. Traditional interpretation connects the prophecy with the coming and work of the Messiah.
Biblical Usage
Daniel’s prophecy begins with the commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. On the traditional interpretation, the sixty-nine weeks, or 483 years, extend to the appearance of Christ, who is then described in the prophecy as being cut off. The final week includes the cessation of sacrifice and offering.
