Sisera
People & Groups • Old Testament
Sisera was the commander of Jabin’s army who was defeated by Barak and Deborah. He fled to Jael’s tent and was killed there; a later family of temple servants also bore the name.
Biblical Usage
Judges presents Sisera as the captain of Jabin’s forces and records his defeat and death at Jael’s hand. Deborah’s song celebrates his overthrow. Another Sisera appears among the Nethinim in Ezra and Nehemiah; the sources provide no evidence that the two men were related.
