Synagogue
A synagogue was a Jewish assembly and place of instruction, prayer, Scripture reading, and exposition. Synagogues became widespread after the exile and provided an important setting for Jesus’ and the apostles’ teaching.
Biblical Usage
Jesus and his disciples frequently taught in synagogues, and the apostles preached there throughout Palestine and the Dispersion. Being put out of the synagogue meant excommunication. Synagogue worship helped preserve Israel’s hope of the Messiah and provided settings for the spread of the gospel.
