TIGLATH-PILESER
Tiglath-pileser III was king of Assyria during the reigns of several kings of Israel and Judah. He received tribute from Menahem, conquered territories of Israel, carried inhabitants into exile, defeated Damascus, and became involved in Ahaz’s submission to Assyria.
Biblical Usage
Menahem paid tribute to the Assyrian king. During Pekah’s reign, Tiglath-pileser invaded Naphtali and carried its inhabitants captive, and the Chronicler records the removal of Reubenites, Gadites, and half Manasseh. When Pekah and Rezin threatened Ahaz, Ahaz appealed to Tiglath-pileser, who captured Damascus and killed Rezin.
