Tyre
Tyre was a wealthy and powerful Phoenician coastal city famed for commerce, shipping, skilled craftsmanship, and purple dye. It maintained relations with Israel, was condemned by the prophets, and was visited by Jesus’ followers.
Biblical Usage
Tyre maintained a friendly alliance with David and Solomon, supplying cedar, metals, sailors, and craftsmen for Israel. The prophets denounced its wealth, slave trading, wickedness, and idolatry and foretold its downfall. Jesus visited its territory, and Paul met disciples there.
