Urim And Thummim
Temple & Tabernacle • Old Testament
The Urim and Thummim were sacred objects associated with the high priest’s breastplate and with seeking God’s judgment. Their exact form and method of use are not revealed, but they were connected with divine guidance for Israel.
Biblical Usage
They were used in seeking God’s will for Israel, including guidance in national crises, military movements, and other difficult matters. Joshua was to seek counsel through Eleazar after the judgment of Urim. The post-exilic community postponed certain priestly decisions until a priest should arise with Urim and Thummim.
