Abigail was the wise and discerning wife of Nabal who prevented David from taking bloody revenge and later became David's wife.
Biography
First Samuel 25 introduces Abigail as intelligent and beautiful, while her wealthy husband Nabal is described as harsh. After Nabal insulted David's men and refused provisions, David set out to destroy his household. Abigail quickly prepared generous supplies, met David, accepted responsibility, and urged him not to incur bloodguilt by avenging himself. David recognized the wisdom of her intervention and blessed God for sending her. After Abigail told Nabal what had happened, he became stricken and died about ten days later. David then asked Abigail to become his wife, and she accompanied him during subsequent years of conflict and exile.
Biblical Significance
Abigail exemplifies wisdom, courage, peacemaking, and confidence in God's justice. Her intervention restrained David from a grave act of vengeance and reminded the future king to leave judgment in God's hands.
