Elisha
Biblical Prophet who came after Elijah
Elisha was Elijah's prophetic successor whose ministry in the northern kingdom combined counsel to kings with numerous miracles of provision, healing, judgment, and restoration.
Biography
Elijah called Elisha from his plowing, and Elisha left his former life to follow him. After witnessing Elijah's departure, Elisha received his mantle and a double portion associated with the prophetic office. Second Kings records many miracles: purifying water, multiplying a widow's oil, raising the Shunammite woman's son, cleansing poisoned food, feeding a multitude, healing Naaman of leprosy, making an iron axe head float, and revealing enemy plans. He advised Israelite kings during conflict with Aram and played a role in the prophetic events surrounding Hazael and Jehu. Even after Elisha's death, a dead man revived when his body touched Elisha's bones.
Biblical Significance
Elisha's ministry demonstrates God's active mercy and power in ordinary needs as well as national crises. As Elijah's successor he confirms continuity of the prophetic word during a spiritually troubled period in Israel.
