Barak son of Abinoam was the military leader called through Deborah to lead Israel against Sisera's Canaanite army.
Biography
Barak came from Kedesh in Naphtali. Deborah told him that the Lord commanded him to gather ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor and promised to draw Sisera and his chariots to the Kishon and give them into Barak's hand. Barak said he would go if Deborah accompanied him. She agreed but told him that because of his response, the final honor over Sisera would go to a woman. Barak led his force down from Tabor, and God threw Sisera's army into confusion. Sisera fled on foot and was killed by Jael. Barak later appears with Deborah as co-singer of the victory song in Judges 5 and is named in Hebrews 11 among examples of faith.
Biblical Significance
Barak's victory demonstrates dependence upon God's promise rather than Canaanite military technology. Hebrews' inclusion of him among the faithful highlights the trust expressed in acting on God's command despite formidable opposition.
