Achan

Achan was an Israelite of the tribe of Judah whose secret taking of devoted spoil from Jericho brought judgment on Israel after the conquest began.
Biography
After Jericho fell, Israel had been commanded not to take items devoted to destruction. Achan secretly took a valuable garment, silver, and gold and hid them beneath his tent. Israel then suffered an unexpected defeat at Ai. God revealed that covenant violation was the cause, and a process of identification eventually singled out Achan. He confessed what he had taken, and the stolen objects were recovered. Achan, his possessions, and those associated with his household judgment were taken to the Valley of Achor, where judgment was carried out. Israel subsequently defeated Ai.
Biblical Significance
Achan's story emphasizes corporate consequences of covenant disobedience and the seriousness of taking what had been devoted to God. The Valley of Achor became a lasting reminder of the event.
