Asahel
Biblical figure, nephew of King David
Asahel was David's nephew, brother of Joab and Abishai, and a swift warrior who was killed by Abner during the conflict between David's and Saul's houses.
Biography
Asahel, a son of David's sister Zeruiah, was renowned for speed. During fighting at Gibeon between forces supporting David and Ish-bosheth, Asahel pursued Abner relentlessly. Abner repeatedly warned him to turn aside, but Asahel refused, and Abner killed him with the butt of his spear. Asahel's death later became Joab's stated motive for murdering Abner. Chronicles includes Asahel among David's mighty men and records his family line.
Biblical Significance
Asahel's death helped perpetuate blood vengeance within David's military leadership. The episode is an important part of the violent transition from Saul's dynasty to David's united kingship.
