Gehazi
biblical character (Second Book of Kings)
Gehazi was Elisha's servant who witnessed prophetic miracles but was struck with Naaman's leprosy after deceitfully seeking payment from the healed Syrian commander.
Biography
Gehazi appears repeatedly in the Elisha narratives. He conveyed Elisha's promise of a son to the Shunammite woman and later tried unsuccessfully to revive her dead child with the prophet's staff. After Naaman was healed of leprosy, Elisha refused payment, but Gehazi secretly pursued Naaman, lied about visiting prophets needing gifts, and took silver and clothing. Elisha confronted him and declared that Naaman's leprosy would cling to him and his descendants. In a later scene Gehazi is speaking with the king about Elisha's great deeds when the Shunammite woman appears seeking restoration of her property.
Biblical Significance
Gehazi is a warning about greed and abuse of spiritual privilege. His story contrasts Elisha's refusal to commercialize God's grace with Gehazi's attempt to profit from a miracle.
