Bible character, son of Japheth (Genesis 10)
Gomer was the eldest son of Japheth and an ancestral figure in the Table of Nations.
Biography
Genesis 10 and 1 Chronicles 1 list Gomer as a son of Japheth and father of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. Ezekiel 38 later uses Gomer as the name of a people included among the forces in the prophecy concerning Gog. Scripture gives no personal narrative about the ancestral Gomer.
Biblical Significance
Gomer connects the Table of Nations with later prophetic ethnic or geographic terminology. The ancestor should be distinguished from Gomer the wife of Hosea.
