Biography

Matthew 1 traces Jesus' legal or royal genealogy through David and Solomon and concludes that Matthan fathered Jacob and Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom Jesus was born. Scripture gives no independent narrative about this Jacob.

Biblical Significance

Jacob's significance is genealogical in Matthew's presentation of Jesus' Davidic ancestry. He should be distinguished from the patriarch Jacob and from Heli, named in Luke's genealogy.
