Japheth
Biblical figure, son of Noah
Japheth was a son of Noah who survived the flood in the ark and became ancestor of peoples listed in the Table of Nations.
Biography
Japheth entered the ark with Noah, his brothers, and their wives. After the flood, when Ham reported Noah's nakedness, Japheth and Shem respectfully walked backward and covered their father. Noah subsequently prayed that God would enlarge Japheth and that he would dwell in the tents of Shem. Genesis 10 lists Japheth's sons and associated peoples.
Biblical Significance
Japheth is one of the three great post-flood ancestral figures through whom Genesis describes the repopulation of the nations.
