Joab son of Zeruiah was David's powerful army commander, a gifted but often ruthless warrior whose violence repeatedly complicated David's reign.
Biography
Joab, David's nephew through Zeruiah, rose to command Israel's army and played a central role in David's wars. He killed Abner in revenge for Asahel's death despite David's desire for reconciliation, captured Jerusalem, and led numerous campaigns. Joab arranged Uriah's death at David's command, later helped restore Absalom from exile, and then killed Absalom despite David's order to spare him. He also murdered Amasa after David appointed Amasa commander. Near David's death Joab supported Adonijah rather than Solomon. David instructed Solomon to deal with Joab's bloodguilt, and Joab was executed at the altar by Benaiah.
Biblical Significance
Joab is one of the Bible's most complex military figures: fiercely loyal to David's kingdom yet repeatedly willing to use unlawful violence. His career shows that political usefulness and military success do not erase personal accountability for bloodshed.
