Joshua
biblical character (Book of Zechariah)
Joshua son of Jehozadak was the high priest of the restored Jewish community after the Babylonian exile and a prominent figure in Zechariah and Haggai.
Biography
Joshua, also called Jeshua, returned with Zerubbabel and helped restore the altar and rebuild the Temple. Haggai repeatedly addressed Zerubbabel and Joshua together as civil and priestly leaders. In Zechariah 3 Joshua stands before the angel of the Lord in filthy garments while Satan accuses him; the filthy garments are removed and clean garments given, symbolizing the removal of guilt. Zechariah 6 later uses Joshua in a symbolic crowning scene connected with the coming Branch.
Biblical Significance
Joshua represents the restoration of Israel's priesthood after exile. Zechariah's visions use his cleansing and office to point beyond the immediate restoration toward God's promised messianic work.
