Nabal was a wealthy but harsh man of Carmel whose insulting refusal to assist David nearly brought destruction on his household until Abigail intervened.
Biography
First Samuel 25 describes Nabal as very wealthy but harsh and badly behaved, while his wife Abigail was discerning and beautiful. David's men had protected Nabal's shepherds and requested provisions during shearing time, but Nabal contemptuously rejected them. David set out to kill the men of Nabal's household. Abigail quickly brought generous provisions, met David, and persuaded him not to avenge himself personally. After she told Nabal what had happened, his heart failed; about ten days later the Lord struck him and he died. David then married Abigail.
Biblical Significance
Nabal's story contrasts foolish arrogance with Abigail's wisdom and shows David being restrained from unnecessary bloodshed. The narrative explicitly presents vengeance as belonging to the Lord rather than to David's anger.
