Naboth was an Israelite of Jezreel murdered through Jezebel's conspiracy after refusing to surrender his ancestral vineyard to King Ahab.
Biography
Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard because it lay near the royal palace and offered either a better vineyard or money for it. Naboth refused because the land was his ancestral inheritance. When Ahab sulked, Jezebel arranged letters in his name ordering local leaders to accuse Naboth falsely of cursing God and the king. Naboth was stoned to death, and Ahab took possession of the vineyard. Elijah confronted Ahab there and pronounced judgment on his dynasty and Jezebel.
Biblical Significance
Naboth's death is a powerful biblical indictment of royal abuse, false testimony, and seizure of inherited property. The episode demonstrates that even a king stands under God's law and will be judged for injustice.
