Biblical figure from the Book of Ruth
Orpah was Naomi's Moabite daughter-in-law who initially set out for Judah with Naomi but ultimately returned to her own people after Naomi urged her to remain in Moab.
Biography
After the deaths of Elimelech, Mahlon, and Chilion, Naomi began returning from Moab to Judah with Ruth and Orpah. Naomi urged both women to return to their mothers' homes and seek new husbands. Both initially wept and resisted, but after Naomi explained the bleak prospects of remaining with her, Orpah kissed Naomi goodbye and returned, while Ruth famously clung to Naomi.
Biblical Significance
Orpah's departure provides the immediate contrast that highlights Ruth's extraordinary covenant loyalty. The biblical text does not condemn Orpah or attach the extensive later legends sometimes associated with her.
