Puah
midwife that appears in the book Exodus (Exodus 1)
Puah was one of the Hebrew midwives who feared God and refused Pharaoh's command to kill newborn Hebrew boys.
Biography
Exodus 1 names Shiphrah and Puah as Hebrew midwives ordered by Pharaoh to kill male Hebrew infants at birth. Because they feared God, they allowed the boys to live. When questioned, they answered Pharaoh, and God dealt well with the midwives and gave them families.
Biblical Significance
Puah is an early Exodus example of courageous obedience to God in defiance of an immoral royal command. The midwives' actions helped preserve Israel during oppression.
