Shaphan
male human biblical figure in 2 Kings 22:3 and 2 Chronicles 34:8, son of Azaliah
Shaphan son of Azaliah was King Josiah's secretary who read the newly found Book of the Law to the king and helped initiate the events surrounding Josiah's reform.
Biography
During Temple repairs Josiah sent Shaphan to Hilkiah the high priest concerning the work. Hilkiah gave Shaphan the Book of the Law that had been found. Shaphan read it and then reported to Josiah, reading the book before him. Josiah tore his clothes and sent Shaphan with other officials to inquire of the Lord through Huldah. Shaphan's family later included several figures sympathetic to Jeremiah.
Biblical Significance
Shaphan stands at a crucial point in Judah's reform under Josiah. His faithful transmission of the recovered Law helped bring the covenant text directly before the king and nation.
