Shiphrah was one of the Hebrew midwives who feared God and refused Pharaoh's command to kill newborn Hebrew boys.
Biography
Exodus 1 names Shiphrah and Puah as midwives whom Pharaoh ordered to kill male Hebrew infants. Because they feared God, they preserved the boys' lives. When Pharaoh questioned them, they answered him, and God dealt well with the midwives and gave them families.
Biblical Significance
Shiphrah exemplifies courageous obedience to God when civil authority commands evil. The midwives' resistance helped preserve Israel during Pharaoh's oppression.
