Tobias, or Tobiah, is the son of Tobit and a principal character in the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit.
Biography
In Tobit, the young Tobias travels with the angel Raphael, though Raphael's identity is initially hidden. During the journey Tobias is instructed concerning a fish whose organs later become instruments in delivering Sarah from the demon Asmodeus and restoring Tobit's sight. Tobias marries Sarah and returns to his parents. The story belongs to the deuterocanonical writings.
Biblical Significance
If retained, Tobias should be clearly identified as deuterocanonical rather than as a figure from the Protestant Old Testament canon.
