Disciple (Christianity)
A disciple is a learner or follower. In the Gospels the term commonly describes those who followed Jesus and received His teaching, ranging from the Twelve to a wider circle of men and women.
Biography
Jesus called disciples to follow Him, learn from Him, obey His teaching, and participate in His mission. The Gospels distinguish the broad company of disciples from the Twelve apostles, whom Jesus selected for a particular role. Some disciples followed temporarily and withdrew when His teaching became difficult, while others remained faithful through the developing ministry. After the resurrection, Jesus commissioned His followers to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them to obey all He commanded.
Biblical Significance
Discipleship is one of the New Testament's central descriptions of the Christian life. It involves allegiance to Jesus, learning His word, self-denial, bearing the cross, love for other believers, and participation in His mission. This record represents a category of followers rather than a single biblical person.
