The Wycliffite Bible
The Wycliffite movement produced the first complete Bible in English, translated from the Latin Vulgate and circulated in handwritten copies.
Full Account
An earlier, more literal translation was followed by a smoother revision often associated with John Purvey. Nicholas of Hereford participated in the earlier work, while John Wycliffe inspired the movement's emphasis on scriptural authority.
The books were copied before and after church restrictions associated with the movement. More than two hundred manuscripts or portions survive, demonstrating substantial circulation despite the expense of hand production.
Historical Significance
The Wycliffite Bible established the complete English Bible tradition and expressed the conviction that English readers should have access to Scripture.
