Printing and Modern Bibles — Manuscript Discoveries
Codex Vaticanus Is Published for Scholars
AD 1868-1881
Nineteenth-century facsimiles and editions made the fourth-century Codex Vaticanus more widely available for detailed study.
Full Account
The manuscript had long been preserved in the Vatican Library, but access and earlier collations were limited. Improved editions enabled scholars to compare its Greek Old and New Testament text more reliably. Vaticanus and Sinaiticus often agree, yet their differences also demonstrate that no single manuscript can substitute for evaluation of the whole tradition.
Historical Significance
The wider use of Vaticanus helped reshape nineteenth-century editions of the Greek New Testament.
