Jesus, the Apostles, and the New Testament — Jesus and the Apostles

The Jerusalem Council

c. AD 48-49
A Visit With Jesus

Apostles and elders met in Jerusalem and affirmed that Gentile believers were not required to become Jewish proselytes to be saved.

Full Account

The rapid inclusion of Gentiles raised a decisive question: must they be circumcised and keep the Mosaic law in order to be saved? Peter, Paul, Barnabas, James, and the Jerusalem elders considered God's work and the testimony of Scripture.

Their judgment defended salvation by the grace of the Lord Jesus while calling Gentile believers to conduct that protected fellowship. A written decision was sent to the churches through trusted representatives.

Historical Significance

The council illustrates apostolic discernment, the authority of Scripture, and the early use of written communication to preserve church teaching.
