Full Account

Merchants, travelers, missionaries, soldiers, families, and displaced believers helped spread the faith through cities and rural regions. Churches appeared in Syria, Egypt, North Africa, Asia Minor, Greece, Italy, and lands beyond the Roman frontier.

New congregations needed Scriptures for worship and instruction. Books were copied individually and in collections, exchanged between churches, and translated for believers who did not read Greek.

Historical Significance

Geographic expansion explains both the wide early attestation of New Testament books and the development of regional manuscript and translation traditions.
