Amman Citadel Inscription

A Visit With Jesus

This is one of the earliest important surviving examples of Ammonite writing. It offers direct evidence of the language and written culture of the kingdom whose capital was at Rabbath-Ammon. It does not independently verify a specific biblical event.

Amman Citadel Inscription

Discovered: Amman Citadel, Amman, Jordan (ancient Rabbath-Ammon)

From: c. Late ninth century BC (approximate; dating is debated)

About the Discovery

The Amman Citadel Inscription is a fragmentary stone inscription written in the ancient Ammonite language. Discovered at the citadel of Amman in 1961, it preserves portions of a text that may concern building work or a religious setting. Because much of the inscription is missing, its complete meaning remains uncertain.

Scripture Reference

Deuteronomy 2:19; 2 Samuel 11:1; Jeremiah 49:1–6 (background references to Ammon, not references to this inscription).
