Moab
Religion and Culture
The chief national god of Moab was Chemosh. The Mesha Stele repeatedly credits Chemosh with granting victory and restoring Moabite territory.
Moabite religious practices shared features with those of neighboring peoples, including sacrifices, sanctuaries, and the belief that divine favor influenced national success.
The Moabite language was closely related to Hebrew. The similarities between the two languages reflect the close cultural relationships among the peoples of the southern Levant.
