Byblos
Government
Byblos was governed by local kings, whose authority rested on control of the city, its harbor, surrounding lands, and religious institutions.
During periods of Egyptian, Assyrian, and Persian dominance, its rulers operated within larger imperial systems. Local royal titles did not always mean full independence.
Royal inscriptions reveal family relationships and the public importance of building temples and dedicating monuments.
