A Visit With Jesus

The chief goddess of Byblos was the Lady of Byblos, commonly called Baalat Gebal. Her worship was closely tied to the city and its royal identity.

Other deities, including Baalshamem, appear in royal inscriptions. Religious buildings, offerings, and dedicatory texts reveal a rich local tradition with connections to neighboring Phoenician and Egyptian cultures.

Byblos is particularly important for the history of writing. Its early Phoenician inscriptions preserve a developed consonantal alphabet related to the writing systems used by neighboring peoples, including ancient Hebrew. Byblos was not the sole birthplace of alphabetic writing, which has earlier roots.
