A Visit With Jesus

Thousands of ostraca attributed to Idumea, especially from the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods, preserve names and transactions. Excavations at Maresha have documented subterranean complexes, olive presses, religious installations, inscriptions, figurines, and elaborate Hellenistic burial caves. Finds reveal a mixed population and changing regional identity. The provenance of many ostraca is uncertain, so individual objects require careful evaluation.
