Idumea had no continuous royal dynasty comparable to Tyre or Nabataea. Persian-period evidence points to local, often clan-based administration. In Hellenistic times, the region was administered within larger kingdoms, with Maresha a major center. It later came under Hasmonean rulers and then the political order associated with Rome and the Herodian family.
