Adiabene was governed by a hereditary royal dynasty. Its kings possessed local authority over taxation, military forces, and court affairs, but operated within the political sphere of Parthia. Succession could be disputed among members of the royal family. Noble families and neighboring rulers could influence internal politics, and the king had to balance local interests with the demands of stronger powers.
