Adiabene
Historical Background
The region had long belonged to the wider cultural world of Assyria and northern Mesopotamia. By the late Hellenistic and Parthian periods, a local dynasty governed Adiabene while recognizing the superior power of the Arsacid kings of Parthia. The kingdom occupied a strategic position between Armenia, Mesopotamia, and the Iranian plateau. Its rulers could exercise considerable independence but were vulnerable to pressure from stronger neighbors.
