Midian

Economy and Trade

A Visit With Jesus

Pastoral herding, travel, and regional exchange probably supported communities in the arid lands associated with Midian. Judges describes Midianites arriving with livestock and camels, while Genesis 37:28 and 36 depicts traders identified as Midianites in the Joseph narrative. These biblical portrayals suggest mobility and commerce, but they cannot establish the size or organization of a specific Midianite economy.
