Archaeological Evidence

Bronze coinage issued at Chalcis sub Libanum includes types naming Ptolemy son of Mennaeus and Lysanias. The Roman Provincial Coinage catalogue records the titles and images on these coins. Coins associated with Herodian rulers also provide evidence for the later political history. Archaeological identification of the city and its boundaries remains less secure than the numismatic evidence.
