Aram-Damascus

Decline and End

A Visit With Jesus

During the eighth century BC, Assyria became increasingly powerful in Syria and the southern Levant.

Rezin, the last king of Aram-Damascus, attempted to resist Assyrian domination through alliances with neighboring rulers.

His alliance with Pekah of Israel and their attack on Judah led Ahaz to seek Assyrian assistance.

Tiglath-pileser III attacked Damascus and conquered the kingdom in 732 BC. According to the biblical account, Rezin was killed and the population experienced deportation.

Damascus was incorporated into the Assyrian imperial system, bringing an end to its independent monarchy.

The city continued to flourish under later empires, but the political kingdom of Aram-Damascus was not restored.
