Geshur
Historical Background
The Bible names Geshur among the peoples living in the region east and northeast of the Sea of Galilee. Joshua 13:13 says that Israel did not drive out the Geshurites and Maacathites and that they continued living among the Israelites.
Geshur is often described as an Aramean-related kingdom, though its precise ethnic and political identity is not securely known. Its location placed it between Israelite communities and other small states of southern Syria.
There is no surviving royal inscription securely naming Geshur or establishing its earliest kings. Much of its political history must therefore be reconstructed cautiously from biblical references and regional archaeology.
