A Visit With Jesus

Hamath's culture reflects its position at the meeting point of Syrian and Anatolian traditions. Early Iron Age royal inscriptions from the region use Luwian hieroglyphic writing. Aramaic became prominent in later inscriptions, including the Zakkur Stele. Religious life included gods worshiped across northern Syria. In his inscription Zakkur praises Baalshamin for protecting him against his enemies. Royal dedications show how kings presented their authority as supported by divine power. Archaeological remains, carved stones, pottery, and monumental buildings illustrate a rich urban culture shaped by changing political and linguistic influences.
