Shemaiah's message centers on submission to the sovereignty and discipline of God. At the division of the kingdom, he told Rehoboam not to attempt to reverse by military force what God had permitted. His intervention prevented a destructive civil war between Judah and the northern tribes.

Later, Shemaiah made clear that political and military disaster could not be separated from Judah's covenant unfaithfulness. Yet his ministry also demonstrates the importance of repentance: when Rehoboam and the leaders humbled themselves, God moderated the judgment. Shemaiah therefore joined warning with mercy, calling rulers and people alike to recognize God's authority and respond humbly to His correction.
