Separation of Light from Darkness
Artist: Michelangelo- Sistine Chapel
2011-09-06
Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling for Pope Julius II between 1508 and 1512. This scene stands at the beginning of the Genesis narrative, near the altar, although it was among the last sections he painted. The immense figure of the Creator fills a relatively small space with movement and authority.
Genesis 1:1–5 begins with God calling light into existence and separating it from darkness. The passage presents creation as the deliberate work of God, whose command establishes order. For Christians, the theme of light also recalls John 1:1–5, where the Word is described as the source of life and light.
Michelangelo shows God twisting upward, with raised arms and billowing drapery. Rather than painting a detailed landscape, he concentrates attention on the Creator himself. The daring perspective makes the figure appear powerful even when viewed from the chapel floor.
