The Creation of Eve

Michelangelo painted the Creation of Eve in the earlier portion of his work on the ceiling. By August 1510 he had completed the section from the entrance toward this scene. It occupies a central place in the sequence between Adam’s creation and the account of humanity’s disobedience.

Genesis 2:18–25 tells how God formed the woman as a fitting companion for the man. Adam recognizes her as sharing his own humanity, and the passage establishes the close bond of marriage. In Michelangelo’s painting, Eve rises toward God while Adam sleeps beside her.

Eve stands with uplifted hands before the imposing figure of God, while Adam lies asleep in the foreground. Their contrasting postures organize the scene clearly. Michelangelo gives the figures a sculptural weight that reflects his mastery of the human form.
