Jeremiah

Jeremiah appears among the monumental prophets surrounding the central Genesis scenes. His ministry unfolded during Judah’s final decades before the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. Michelangelo’s portrayal gives the prophet the weight of a man burdened by what he has witnessed.

Jeremiah warned Judah of coming judgment but also spoke of restoration. His promise of a new covenant, written on the hearts of God’s people, appears in Jeremiah 31:31–34. Christians see this promise as fulfilled through Jesus (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8:6–13).

The prophet sits bent forward with his head resting on one hand. His downcast face and closed posture communicate grief without dramatic action. Michelangelo uses the heavy figure and subdued expression to convey the sorrow traditionally associated with Jeremiah.
